What’s Your Declutter Mindset?

Summer is almost here but you still have a bit more time for spring cleaning. Although decluttering and home organization motivates others, for you it’s a dreaded to-do.

Perhaps it’s not so much the task itself but your declutter mindset that is the problem. Do you hear yourself in any of these?

“I have to do it perfectly”. For you, it’s 100 or 0 – the all or nothing rule. Progress or perfection is quite the dilemma.

“I’ll start on it later”.  The problem is later never comes.  Procrastination is your friend, so until you break up with it later turns into weeks, months, then years.

“I might need this again”. There is always hope that items you have not used in years will still have value, but they just continue to collect dust. Possessions end up possessing you.

The best way to cope with any of these is to declutter your mindset and set your mind on how refreshing and liberating just one tidy space will feel.

Tip: Flip through some magazines and find organized spaces that speak to you. Tear the pages out and instead of writing “declutter” on your to-do list, tape the pages in the area(s) needing decluttering or on your bathroom mirror as a daily inspiration and motivation.
